Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios eventually entered Early Access this year. Baldur’s Gate 3 might be your entry point into the world of Dungeons & Dragons if you enjoy role-playing games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 or want to start playing D&D but don’t have a Dungeon Master or other players to play with.
Baldur’s Gate 3 release date
On Mac and PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access is currently available for purchase.
Remember that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released under Early Access, so don’t expect a polished or finished product. Although the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 is still unknown, if Divinity: Original Sin 2 is any indicator, it will be at least a year before Baldur’s Gate 3 is deemed complete. On September 15, 2016, Divinity: Original Sin 2 went live in Early Access, and on September 14, 2017, it became fully available.
The official release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 is 2023.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Dungeons & Dragons connection
The main distinction between Baldur’s Gate and Divinity is that the latter is genuinely based on the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Why does that matter? In fact, the 5th Edition of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons is directly referenced, as are the races, classes, and even the setting.
You’ll be trapped in the middle of the Blood War, one of the most recognisable conflicts in the franchise and an adventure module for the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Demons, who reside in the nefarious plane of chaos of the Abyss, and devils, who dwell in the equally nefarious but legitimate realm of the Nine Hells, are the two parties engaged in the conflict.

If you’re unsure of the distinction between the two, just keep in mind that demons seek to destroy everything, whilst devils seek to dominate it.
There are no online spoilers for the story Larian Studios is creating because it is entirely original. To learn more about the realm, though, you can read about The Forgotten Realms, the setting of Dungeons & Dragons. Avernus, the bottom level of hell, and Baldur’s Gate, a significant trading hub on Faerûn’s western coast, are two important places you’ll travel to in this game.

Although there are just a few classes available, Larian Studios promised that when Baldur’s Gate 3 is fully released, players will be able to choose any class from the 5th Edition of the Dungeons & Dragons rules, which is fantastic because I need my Sorcerer goddammit! In an AMA on Reddit, Swen Vincke, Creative Director at Larian Studios, stated that in Baldur’s Gate 3, “The universe and the main arc of the tale are much more strongly tied to custom characters. […] If you decide to play as a bespoke character, we are certain that you won’t feel shortchanged in terms of narrative depth and scope.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay
A third-person/isometric role-playing game (RPG) like Divinity: Original Sin 2 is extremely comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3. Like any RPG, there will be in-depth discussions with a variety of dialogue options, but the combat in this game will follow turn-based rules. Four heroes will make up your party; one of them will be a new character you create, and the other three will be party members you encounter in the real world.
You can queue up online with up to three other players, each of whom has a different character.
Like Dungeons & Dragons, the outcome of the dice roll will affect how successfully you complete actions or pull off dangerous dialogue decisions. In Dungeons & Dragons, your character will have modifiers based on what they specialise in, thus your performance isn’t solely dependent on luck because you can become an expert in particular skill sets.
Depending on the character you play, you can use a tactical top-down view to cast spells, hurl daggers, or cut things up with a huge greatsword. When it comes to battle, it’s very much a strategy game, but there is still a lot of flexibility to explore and play with various things around you because of the inventiveness of Dungeons & Dragons and Larion Studios’ Divinity 4.0 engine.
Apparently, says Vincke “Staying true to our roots, we’ll give players a tonne of systems and plenty of agency to use these systems and attempt to do what you need to on your individual adventure and the adventure of your party. That won’t change because it’s the foundation of what we’re doing. But there will be a D&D interpretation because—we tried it!—porting the fundamental rules to a video game doesn’t work.”
If you want to do something intelligent and cautious when not in combat, like setting up ambushes or sneaking around at night, you can start a turn-based mode when you’re not in combat.
