Berks guy drives police on 90-mph chase following fire truck crash

After hitting a fire truck and the chief’s personal vehicle at the Oley Fire Company on Monday evening in plain view of a police officer, a guy from Douglassville allegedly led police on a high-speed chase through parts of three municipalities and one covered bridge.

The fire department and an ambulance were called to the intersection of Oysterdale Road and Route 73 in Oley Township at around 6 o’clock due to a report of a driver apparently dozing off or having a medical emergency while operating an SUV.

When emergency personnel came, they found a guy, later identified as Michael V. Konchan, 27, unconscious in the driver’s seat of a running SUV.

The following report was submitted by the Central Berks Regional Police Department: Konchan woke up and grabbed the forearm of the EMT who had reached inside the car to turn off the ignition. Soon after, Konchan put the car in drive.

Joshua Steingraber, a police officer, pulled up to see what happened next. Numerous first responders surrounded the SUV as it started to proceed with the medic still half inside.  The SUV collided with a parked firetruck that had firefighters, as well as the unoccupied vehicle of Oley Township Fire Chief Michael Kline. The doctor was able to get out from under the SUV and go away.

Driving recklessly through Earl Township and then Amity Township, Konchan passed other cars unlawfully and ran stop signs as he headed east on Covered Bridge Road. For those 11 kilometers, Konchan averaged roughly 90 miles per hour in his pursuit. After driving into the Amity Township Fire Company parking lot on Pine Forge Road, Konchan was arrested without further incident.

When asked what had happened, Konchan said the police he was afraid when he saw they were chasing him and couldn’t recall how the incident had begun. Half an hour before the incident, he admitted to consuming fentanyl and cocaine.
