However, there is still one more episode in season 1o of Call the Midwife, which will see the Nonnatus House staff deal with Nancy’s revelation and come to terms with it.
Call the Midwife has been renewed for at least two more seasons, securing its place on the BBC for the next three years as we bid farewell to the Sisters.
A special documentary featuring past and present members of the cast and crew will air directly following this week’s final episode to commemorate the popular Sunday night drama’s tenth anniversary.
Viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at how the show is produced, and we’ll reminisce about some of our favourite Nonnatus House moments.

Call the Midwife Season 10 Release Date
The 10th season of Call the Midwife premiered on BBC One on Sunday, April 18, 2021, at 8 p.m.
There are seven episodes in total, with new ones airing on BBC One every Sunday at 8 p.m.
To mark the 10th anniversary of Call the Midwife on Sunday 30th May at 9 pm on BBC One, there will be a special documentary about the show airing.
Why Is Call the Midwife Airing Now?
In a normal year, Call the Midwife would have been back in January. Because of coronavirus, filming was postponed for five months and couldn’t be broadcast on the scheduled day. The number of episodes in the series has been reduced from eight to seven.
It was a top priority to deliver a 90-minute festival special in time for Christmas Day as soon as filming could begin on Call the Midwife. It aired on BBC One on December 25th, 2020, and can be accessed on BBC iPlayer at any time.
Call the Midwife Season 10 Cast
Actors Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne), Linda Bassett, Judy Parfitt, Fenella Woolgar, Ella Bruccoleri, Helen George, and Leonie Elliott are all part of the Call the Midwife cast for season 10 at Nonnatus House in London (Lucille Anderson).
Shelagh Turner’s daughter, Laura Main (Stephanie McGann), is returning as well as Cliff Parisi (Fred Buckle) as well as Annabelle Apsion (Viola Buckle) as well as Georgie Glen (Missy Higgins) and Max Macmillan (Timothy Turner) (Cyril Robinson).
Even though her character Mother Mildred was absent from the 2020 Christmas special, Miriam Margolyes is still a castmate.
Season 10 of Call the Midwife will not feature Jennifer Kirby (Nurse Valerie Dyer), who has decided to step down.

What Is Call the Midwife Season 10 About?
As Sister Julienne struggles to keep Nonnatus House afloat in 1966, she serves as a central character in the most recent Call the Midwife season. While Lucille and Cyril’s relationship grows, Trixie becomes close to a widower in Season 10.
England’s World Cup victory is also covered in the drama, though Fred Buckle’s unfortunate bet was not so good news. PKU, gestational diabetes, pilonidal cyst, and acute myeloid leukaemia are just some of the medical conditions that have been explored in season 10. Episode one also featured a storyline about Operation Grapple and the long-term health effects of radiation exposure.
According to Heidi Thomas, this season focuses on social and legal shifts in the lead-up to a major piece of legislative legislation. I do know that when we get to series 11, it will be 1967, so abortion will be legalised and homosexuality legalised. These are significant turning points in modern social history. I know we’ll be referencing these and the journey towards these things. I’m confident that the progress we’ve made as a society will continue because there has been a lot of public discussion about the changes in society.”
We wonder if Call the Midwife will cover the Aberfan disaster later on in the series. 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a mountain of coal ash fell on Pantglas Junior School in Aberfan, Wales, early one October morning. At Nonnatus House, the tragedy is certain to touch a few people’s hearts.
Has Call the Midwife Been Recommissioned?
Yes! We already knew that Call the Midwife would return in 2022 for its eleventh season, but the BBC has now ordered seasons 12 and 13, ensuring the show’s long-term viability.
Each of these will have eight episodes, as well as special Christmas episodes. In other words, the show will be on the air until at least 2024.
“It’s an incredible privilege to be able to look back on a decade of Call the Midwife, and yet know that our journey is still very far from over,” said the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, Heidi Thomas. We couldn’t be happier that we’ll be continuing for a couple more years! When it comes to the future of Nonnatus House, it’s full of familiar faces and new ones, as well as higher hemlines. It’s like having a baby: “The stories we tell never stop coming, we love them all, and we promise to do our best by every single one.”
As Nonnatus House Being Knocked Down?
Unfortunately, this is something we have no idea about.
A passionate speech by Trixie Franklin (Helen George) persuaded the authorities not to demand impossible rent or slash the Order’s budget in the season nine finale. However, this one-year reprieve from death is only valid for one year.
In addition, the structure will be demolished in the next two years to make way for new construction on the surrounding streets.
When asked about the fate of Nonnatus House at Radio Times Covers Party, Heidi Thomas said, “It reflects what was going on in the East End at that time, and indeed what happened to the original order of nuns who were based there and whose work inspired our series.”
“If they weren’t in danger, I don’t think it would be very realistic. We know they’ve had to relocate before due to an unexploded bomb that exploded on their premises. Their surroundings have been demolished as a result.
“We are delighted to have secured the future of Call the Midwife for two further series beyond those which are currently in production,” BBC Director of Drama Piers Wenger said in April 2021, when the show was recommissioned for a second season.

What Happened in the Call the Midwife Christmas Special 2020?
The circus came to Poplar in December 1965, and Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) was allowed to fulfil a dream she never knew she had, as ringmaster Mr Percival allowed her to dress up and fly on the trapeze.
We also got to see Gloria Venables, a previous Call the Midwife character, return for a heartfelt storyline involving Shelagh Turner (Laura Main). Amid her grief and despair after a string of miscarriages, poor Gloria found herself pregnant once more, just a few weeks away from her due date.
Meanwhile, Trixie from Call the Midwife used a subscription to a “Marriage Bureau” she received for Christmas to go speed dating. Even so, it wasn’t a huge hit.
While in the hospital, Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) was subjected to a slew of humiliations, prompting Nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott) to come up with a plan to bring her elderly friend home for the holidays.
How Has Coronavirus Affected Called the Midwife?
We expected that the show would return for a Christmas special (set in Poplar) and then season 10 in January 2021 after the conclusion of series nine. Even so, filming for Call the Midwife was postponed in March 2020 because of an outbreak of coronavirus in the United Kingdom.
“Very sadly, we have had to postpone the filming of this year’s Call the Midwife Christmas Special and series 10,” Executive Producer Dame Pippa Harris stated in a statement on the show’s Facebook page. Our primary concern is for the well-being of our talented cast and crew, and we do not believe that filming can safely proceed at this time.
No matter how bad things get now, the nuns and nurses of Nonnatus House will be back on their bikes soon enough to bring joy and new life into your homes. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to returning to Poplar as soon as possible.”
The team behind Call the Midwife was determined to deliver the festive episode in time for Christmas, despite the concerns of the show’s fans. “Scripts are still being written, and we will begin filming as soon as circumstances allow,” Heidi Thomas, the show’s writer and creator, told RadioTimes.com in April. Getting the Christmas Special on the air on Christmas Day is our top priority, and we will do everything in our power to make it happen.”
When we asked Annie Tricklebank about the Christmas special in May, she said it was “absolutely, definitely” still possible: There will be a Christmas Day broadcast of the show. “We’re going to make it.”
All of us are thrilled to be putting the dust sheets away at Nonnatus House and returning to filming after lockdown,” Heidi Thomas said. As promised at the beginning of the pandemic, we were able to deliver the Christmas Special on time. Call the Midwife is a family, and like any family, we’ve missed each other.
This time around, we’ll be putting more love and energy into our work, and we can’t wait to share series ten with our amazing, loyal audience.”
Season 10 has been reduced to seven hour-long episodes instead of the expected (and usual) eight episodes as a result of the pandemic.
Using prosthetics whenever possible and limiting contact with the actual baby’s onset has also changed the way Call the Midwife films newborns. It’s also been requested that their mothers serve as midwives’ body doubles, donning elaborate costumes and acting in the scenes themselves.
Are They Currently Filming Call the Midwife?
Season 10 of Call the Midwife wrapped up filming on February 19th, but the cast and crew are already gearing up for season 11.
“This is where our production offices are and Heidi was there to help plan our next instalment of filming,” a post on the show’s official Facebook page explained.
“Call the Midwife production’s normal timetables have changed dramatically as a result of the year’s extraordinary disruption, and our team has had to make numerous adjustments. However, the start of series 11 filming is still on schedule!
