After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, what comes next? Naturally, we must return to space. Carol Danvers is joined in the follow-up to Captain Marvel by the equally impressive Ms. Marvel and Photon (aka Monica Rambeau) in the next MCU film The Marvels.
Even though the release date for The Marvels is still a ways off, we’ve got the first trailer for you to enjoy in the meanwhile. There’s also information on the characters and plot, with sneak peeks at exclusive footage shown at D23. Enjoy!
Captain Marvel 2 Release Date
On November 10, 2023, moviegoers will be able to see The Marvels in theaters. A new poster, which Marvel released earlier this year and which you can view below, confirms the postponement of the film’s release from its initial date of July 28, 2023.
The tweet below confirms the release date:

Like the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, it will eventually make its way to Disney Plus, though there is currently no set release date for the streaming service. The release date of The Marvels was previously set for earlier. Marvel planned on having the film in theaters on July 8, 2022, when Kevin Feige first revealed it at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. However, this was delayed because of the pandemic.
The first release date for The Marvels was slated for February 17th, 2023. Marvel then shifted the release of Ant-Man 3 to the first part of 2022. Now we have to wait until November to see more of Captain Marvel as the release date was pushed back.
Trailer for “The Marvels”
The first trailer for The Marvels has here, and it looks like there will be plenty of space mayhem in store. There was a major case of exchanging places on the cards for Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan after the Ms. Marvel finale, and the new teaser suggests that Monica Rambeau gets caught up in it, too.
They unexpectedly switch bodies while on a mission for Nick Fury in space, and we show Kamala’s reaction to finding herself in zero gravity as being more than a little startling.
The film’s antagonist, played by Zawe Ashton, is also briefly introduced, as is an entertaining exchange between Kamala’s mother and Carol and the obligatory appearance of Goose the Cat, who helps defeat several villains.
Who is in the Next Captain Marvel Sequel?
At the Disney Investor Day in December 2020, it was stated that Brie Larson would return as Carol Danvers and that she would be joined by some exciting new characters.
Teyonah Parris, who made her debut in the part in WandaVision, will return as an adult Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani, who made her debut as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the Disney+ series of the same name, will also return for the sequel.
Vellani disclosed that she learned about her casting in The Marvels the night before the announcement was made.
Although the events of WandaVision gave Monica superpowers, the title may just as easily apply to Carol and Kamala as the two Captain Marvels. Although Carol is currently the only active Captain Marvel, in the comics Monica became Captain Marvel first.

The broadcast also disclosed the tragic news that Maria Rambeau had passed away during the five years that Monica had been dusted by the Snap, according to WandaVision. That seems to rule out Lashana Lynch’s possible comeback in the follow-up.
Lynch, though, isn’t ruling out a cameo appearance in the sequel. Stranger Things have occurred in the series before. “I had a great time on the first one, and it would be great to have a great time on another one,” she stated in August of 2021.
Lynch has since resurfaced in the MCU as Maria Rambeau, the current or former Captain Marvel of Earth-838 (specifically, in Doctor Strange 2). Let’s hope this sets the stage for her to make an appearance in the sequel.
It’s also obvious that Monica and Carol have some problems to resolve (perhaps related to her not being present for her mother), so perhaps these could be handled in flashbacks, in which case Lynch could return to her part.
Zawe Ashton has been cast as a major antagonist, although at this time we don’t know who she’ll be playing. She would best be strong because there could be three Captain Marvels after her.
Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur will return as Kamala’s brother Aamir, mother Muneeba, and father Yusuf, respectively; Park Seo-Joon, from Parasite, will also make his MCU debut in the sequel.
In the first film, only Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan), a member of Starforce, was killed off, therefore she is essentially the only character we know won’t be back for the sequel.
The trailer seemingly confirmed that everyone’s favorite Flerken, Nick Fury, will be returning in August 2021, so here’s hoping we get to see him reconcile with Goose.
