Already on the radar of every Manhwa fan, the announcement of the anime adaptation of Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady With the Lamp has made it one of the most anticipated releases of 2024.
The project has unveiled important character graphics and voice actors that would be portraying them in the series. Yui Ishikawa, who is most known for portraying Mikasa in Attack on Titan, will play the lead role of Elise, and the cast as a whole is outstanding, to say the least.
Yhei Azakami, who previously voiced Bungo Stray Dogs and most recently appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, has been cast as Linden. Yoshimasa Hosoya, who will play Graham, is also recognizable to both of his co-stars, having previously portrayed Reiner in Attack on Titan and Doppo Kunikida in Bungo Stray Dogs.

The Promising Future of Adapted Manhwa
Due to Doctor Elise’s ability to target such prominent voice performers, it appears that animated adaptations of manhwa will continue to increase in frequency and scale in the years to come. The Japanese animation studio Maho Film, which brought you smash hits like “I’m Standing on a Million Lives” and “I’m the Villainess, So I’m Taming the Final Boss,” will be adapting Elise for the first time.
As with the impending Solo Leveling adaptation by Aniplus, the interest of Japanese anime companies in adapting manhwa has grown in recent years. Some anime fans have noticed recurring cliches, and Doctor Elise could be the refreshing change of pace for isekai watchers thanks to the growing popularity of manhwa and South Korean webtoons.
Doctor Elise follows the story of Jihyun Song, a brilliant surgeon and respected professor who is hiding a devastating secret from everyone. The doctor’s kind nature is a reincarnation of a woman named Elise de Clarence, who was executed for her vicious acts and burned at the stake.
In an effort to make one for her sins, Jihyun devotes her life to saving others, but a plane catastrophe forces her to return to her old ways. She is reborn as Elise with the determination to finally get it right this time by studying modern medicine and becoming a world-renowned surgeon. This makes her a target for the dangerous heir to the imperial realm, Prince Linden.
