The United States government said on Monday that it will not be funding the government shutdown. Nearly five hours of the Supreme Court’s time was devoted to oral argument examining the constitutionality of race-conscious college admissions processes, with special emphasis on the practices of Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.
While the current Supreme Court has greater racial diversity than ever before, they will likely vote to terminate affirmative action in higher education. African-American and Hispanic pupils may be adversely affected if the conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court decides to overturn the decades-old norm. At least six of the nine justices on the court are expected to rule in support of a ban on affirmative action.
Racial diversity would suffer if the Supreme Court rules to outlaw affirmative action and other race-based admissions programs. The University of Michigan and the University of California, two of the best in the country, were banned from employing racial preferences in admissions procedures 15 years ago. Since then, it has been a challenge for both university systems to attract a diverse student body across racial lines.
Anti-affirmative action advocates often make the case that the policy has the opposite effect and unfairly targets white individuals. In the United States, it appears that divisiveness, polarization, and resistance to “woke ideology” have strengthened during the Trump administration.
Even though critical race theory was not being taught in K-12 schools, it has been the target of criticism from legislators in several states. In Florida, for example, Governor Ron DeSantis has spoken out against the inclusion of “divisive topics” in the curriculum, including anti-racism, systemic racism, and white supremacy.

Justice Clarence Thomas said in Monday’s meeting that he doesn’t “have a clue” about what diversity entails. When there isn’t a shared definition of diversity, it’s hard to make progress toward a solution. The concept of diversity has been stigmatized. There is, perhaps, better language available to explain the unique difficulty of attracting people from underrepresented groups.
Inaccurate terminology isn’t the only problem. Affirmative action may be overturned not only in schools but also in business. Negative consequences on the talent pipeline might result from rules that discourage consideration of candidates’ race and ethnicity when making hiring decisions. Existing difficulties in attracting and hiring people of color, particularly people of color of non-Caucasian descent, are a significant drain on company resources.
Affirmative action programs have been shown to improve the representation of women and people of color. As seen at the University of Michigan and the University of California, institutions with “race-neutral” policies have trouble attracting and recruiting talented people from underrepresented groups.

The advantages of variety have been the subject of an abundance of studies. Creativity and innovation flourish in a wide variety of settings. Financial success is increased by a more diverse workforce. Greater financial returns were observed in a McKinsey research that included both racial/ethnic and gender diversity in 2014, and the same was true in 2019.
It has been shown that diverse teams perform better than teams with a similar composition. Although diversity programs and race-aware policies are not without fault, they should not be abandoned altogether. Organizations and institutions should not see diversity initiatives as a type of performative activism by only engaging in them to tick a box.
The purpose of affirmative action is not to provide members of historically oppressed groups with an “unfair edge,” but rather to address the systematic prejudice that has long stood in the way of people from those communities realizing their full potential.

Affirmative action programs have significant flaws, as was previously indicated; Wells Fargo fabricated job interviews in its pursuit of diversity, and white women have profited disproportionately from affirmative action measures. The United States takes great pleasure in being a place where people of many backgrounds and beliefs may succeed.
Eliminating racially sensitive laws and practices will damage America’s educational system and the contemporary workplace, which relies heavily on the country’s rich diversity. The dangers that aim to disrupt U.S. society appear to be growing by the day.
