The 1993 film Hocus Pocus is now considered a staple for Halloween viewing among families. The fantasy comedy, which took place in Salem, featured Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters, three evil witches who were accidentally brought back to life by a teenage boy on Halloween night.
Last year’s Hocus Pocus 2 on Disney+ saw the return of the Sanderson Sisters, who were once again brought back to life by a group of teens on Halloween. Despite receiving a dismal 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel was a big success for Disney+, becoming the service’s most-viewed movie.
Hocus Pocus 3 Release Date
Hocus Pocus 3 is presumably in its early stages of development, as the announcement came via an interview with a Disney executive. Given that the latest film only premiered on Disney+ a little over a year ago and the cast has made no mention of any preparations for a third installment, it seems clear that there is none in the works.
It’s likely that Hocus Pocus 3 will be another Disney+ original instead of a theatrical release. In order to avoid disappointing audiences in theaters, Disney+ will likely try to duplicate the popularity of the last film.
The release date for Hocus Pocus 3 cannot be determined at this time due to how early it is in production and the fact that the ongoing writers’ strike has likely halted production for the time being. When studios and the WGA come to a fair agreement is when development may continue.
Disney is likely going to try to release Hocus Pocus 3 in time for Halloween once again, so 2025 is probably the earliest we’ll see it. The movie is more likely to be released much further in the future due to the strike’s inevitable halt of any production and the predicted writing backlog across the board after it ends.
But if Sean Bailey wants Hocus Pocus to become the franchise success he’s been looking for, maybe Disney will move the release date up for the third installment.
What Made Hocus Pocus Work So Well?
Hocus Pocus is a classic Disney film that has stood the test of time. Though it bombed during its 1993 theatrical run, “Halloween” has since become a mainstay of the holiday for many viewers thanks to repeated airings on television. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy portrayed the wicked and witchy Sanderson sisters.
In 1693, three witches are accused and executed for their roles in a ritual meant to rid Salem of evil. A group of unfortunate children in 1993 mistakenly resurrect the sisters, setting them against the group for the entirety of Halloween night.

Midler, Parker, and Najimy all reprised their roles as the Sanderson sisters in the sequel, which also deepened their backstory. Young adults are introduced to the Sanderson sisters and their own personal issues. In the film’s post-credits scene, the presence of a third installment was teased. And now, thanks to Bailey’s declaration, it appears as though we will soon be treated to more Salem magic.
