Season 2 of House of the Dragon will feature a return to a significant site from Game of Thrones, which may lead to an inconsistency in the story of Daenerys Targaryen. House of the Dragon is set roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, giving it a degree of canonical freedom not shared by many prequels.
Unless it reveals something significant, like that Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros because he had a dream about the White Walkers. However, aside from the prophecies and dragon nightmares, House of the Dragon doesn’t affect A Game of Thrones much. Season 2 of House of the Dragon, a prequel, shockingly appears to be returning to the Wall, which may change things.
There may be some mystery about the Wall’s presence at the House of the Dragon, but there’s no denying the location makes sense. However, it may also cause problems with Daenerys’ continuity.
The Wall’s Secrets in House of the Dragon
The Wall is absent from the sections of Fire & Blood that detail the Dance of the Dragons, but it will almost certainly play a role in the second season of House of the Dragon when it premieres in 2024.
After the events of the first season of House of the Dragon, Jacaerys Velaryon flies to Winterfell, passing through the Vale on his way there. His destination is Lord Cregan Stark, whom he hopes to convince to join his cause.
It is believed that Jacaerys and Cregan became fast friends and that a trip to the Wall on the back of Jace’s dragon, Vermax, would be a great way to bond as a group. Understandably, Jace would want to visit the Wall before his life is devoured by battle; after all, it’s one of Westeros’s wonders. If Jacaerys takes his dragon to the Wall, then it’s unclear if Vermax will continue beyond it.
Daenerys’ dragons had no trouble crossing this to rescue Jon Snow and the others, but this was not the case in earlier episodes of Game of Thrones. Only Queen Alysanne’s Silverwing (one of the new dragons in season 2 of House of the Dragon) had previously gone to the Wall before Dany. Silverwing flatly refused to fly over the Wall, unlike Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion, or was, as has been theorized, magically barred from doing so.

If Vermax can pass the Wall without incident, it would indicate that Silverwing was an outlier justifiably frightened by the concept. But if Vermax doesn’t, it suggests a rule: that these dragons have an innate fear of venturing beyond the Wall or that some ancient magic is connected to the Wall’s construction that keeps them out.
And if one of those things is true, then Daenerys’ dragons shouldn’t have been able to fly across the Wall, which would be a major plot hole in the Game of Thrones series.
The Wall’s Role in House of the Dragon Season 2
Going to the Wall is an intriguing possibility for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, even though it wasn’t a part of the book and might create a storyline hole in Game of Thrones.
For Jacaerys, this is especially true since expanding on his relationship with Cregan (or, according to some of the more lurid rumors from Fire & Blood, his relationship with Cregan’s bastard half-sister, Sara Snow) could be fantastic for developing his character and bringing some much-needed humor to the tale.
But there’s also a deeper conceptual link to the Wall, which would explain why Vermax is there, too. Aegon’s vision of the White Walkers was revealed in the first season of House of Dragon, and his Song of Ice and Fire has influenced the arcs of Viserys and Rhaenyra, as well as Alicent’s decision to crown her son King.
In the current order of things, Jace is Rhaenyra’s successor and the next person to learn of the prophecy; his trip to the Wall, beyond where the White Walkers dwell, may be seen as a suitable connection between the two.
