On December 28th, 2021, John passed away. There has been no word on what caused his de@th. There were a few injuries throughout his career, most notably a knee injury that ended his time as an offensive tackle with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he hasn’t discussed a health issue in recent years.

John Madden’s Health Struggles
John Madden, like the rest of us, had to deal with a number of health issues during the course of his life. According to accounts, his joint problems worsened and became chronic in his old age. When he retired as a coach in 1979, stomach ulcers were a contributing factor.
Madden announced his retirement from coaching for good in January 1979, after leading the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl title in his ten years at the helm. He put his decision down to a bothersome ulcer and burnout from his job.
After retiring, he turned his attention to broadcasting, a career he would abandon after undergoing heart surgery in 2015. It is stated that on the day before Thanksgiving of that year, he began experiencing heart problems. While at home, the coach began to experience respiratory difficulties.
A doctor was contacted, and an ambulance was sent to transfer him to the neighboring Pleasanton Valley Care Center. Then, open-heart surgery was performed on him at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. The date was November 30th, 2015.

John Madden’s Possible Health Issues
Although I lack access to John Madden’s medical records, I may surmise that he suffered from fatty liver, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems that commonly accompany excessive abdominal obesity.
Since his grandson was diagnosed with type I diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes), Madden has been an outspoken advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and a major contributor to its fundraising efforts. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to locate any documentation that Madden had been diagnosed with the far more common Type II diabetes.
Seventy percent or more of North American individuals will develop diabetes or pre-diabetes, both of which can be managed with dietary and exercise improvements. The majority of people who develop type II diabetes or prediabetes have a condition called insulin resistance, which is characterized by the body’s inability to properly respond to insulin.
