In The Dating Game (1970), where he won a trip for two to Lake Havasu, Arizona, he made his on-screen debut. In the 1980s television series “Dan August,” he starred as a student activist opposite Burt Reynolds. In Disney’s “The Barefoot Executive” in 1971, he played his first movie role.
After that, Ritter made numerous guest appearances on TV shows, including “Hawaii Five-O” and “M*A*S*H.” Reverend Matthew Fordwick, a recurring role Ritter played on the NBC drama series The Waltons from 1972 to 1976.
Ritter was free to look for other acting roles because he wasn’t a regular cast member until 1976 when he got the role of a lifetime. For his depiction of Jack Tripper on the venerable ABC comedy “Three’s Company” (1976–1984), he received an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 1984.
