How Much Do We Really Know About the Story of The Little Mermaid?
As earlier Disney live-action remakes like Aladdin and Mulan before it, The Little Mermaid will likely keep the same core elements as the original animated film. The live-action adaptation, however, will include a more confident Ariel, according to Halle Bailey.
“I’m really excited for my version of the film because we’ve definitely changed that perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy,” Bailey told Edition magazine. “It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants.
“As women we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above,” she continued. In addition, I think it’s great that Disney is modernizing some of those motifs.
Some minor adjustments have been made to the picture, most notably the addition of several new songs to the film’s soundtrack. The cast of characters has also been updated for the year 2023.
Here’s what Disney says about the film:
“The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.
Ariel has to listen to her heart even if mermaids aren’t supposed to talk to humans. When she bargains with the sea witch Ursula for a taste of terrestrial life, she risks losing both her own and her father’s throne.
