The next version of macOS, announced at the June 5 WWDC keynote and named after a wine area in California, will be called Sonoma.
Widget updates, a new Game Mode, the ability to quickly and easily convert web pages into web applications, and entertaining new capabilities for video conferencing apps are all on the way to Macs. Here’s the scoop on all the upcoming updates and additions in 2023.
MacOS Sonoma Release Date
Apple has announced that macOS 14 Sonoma, a free update for all compatible Macs, will be released later this year.
After today’s (June 5) presentation at WWDC 2023, Apple is likely to provide registered developers with immediate access to a macOS 14 beta. The public beta is expected to launch in July 2023, while the final release is expected to occur in September 2023, per Apple’s regular release timetable.
What’s New in macOS 14 Sonoma?
Apple just touched on a few of the many exciting new features that will be included in macOS 14 Sonoma at the WWDC 2023 keynote.
Along with macOS 14 Sonoma, Apple is also updating its web browser, Safari, with some minor but noticeable changes. With the addition of Profiles, you’ll be able to customize your Mac for several users or distinct purposes (say, a professional profile and a personal profile if you bring your personal Mac to the office).
Safari’s incognito mode has been upgraded to prevent trackers from loading, lock the window when you leave the browser, and more. In addition, you will be able to securely share passwords and passkeys with members of trusted groups (such as your family), and you may add frequently-used websites to your Dock as a “web app” that can be launched with a single click and a streamlined web interface.

With the release of macOS 14 Sonoma, widgets are making a significant debut on Mac. Widgets like Weather, Notes, and others are now available on the desktop instead of in the Notification Center. Thanks to Apple’s Continuity technology, you’ll also have access to the Widgets on your iPhone.

Plus. Having a widget on your Mac desktop that allows you to drag and drop photographs to automatically modify them is just one example of the interactivity you can set up with a widget.
With the release of macOS 14, Apple demonstrated a number of new video effects that may be used during video chats. These use Apple’s Neural Engine’s processing capacity to do tasks like inserting the content of your screen between you and your background for a more lifelike presentation.
To add some flair to your responses, you can set off “cinematic-quality” visual effects like digital fireworks displays or bubbling emotes while on a call.
Messages, Mail, Siri, and other Mac applications will all be updated in less radical ways. Simple things like not needing to say “Hey” to activate Siri or gaining access to what Apple calls “a better, more intuitive autocorrect feature” are examples. These changes are also included in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, so keep an eye out for them in macOS 14 Sonoma.
