New Manga Adaptation of Yang Guifei Novels to Launch in August

Senta Nakazawa will release a manga titled Ykihi, Kirara (Yang Guifei, Kirara), based on the novels of author Baku Yumemakura, illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, and ceramicist Shkoku Kan about Yang Guifei, who is regarded as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, in the August issue of Akita Shoten’s Monthly Princess magazine, it was announced on Thursday. On August 4, the manga will debut in the publication’s subsequent issue.

On Thursday, Nakazawa shared a preview picture from the comic on Twitter.

The protagonist of the historical fable romance, Ygyoku Kan (also known as Yang Yuhuan in Chinese), lost her parents and now shares a small apartment with her adopted parents. She has an exceptional natural beauty, which bothers her, but one day she hopes to understand what love is all about.

Onmyji novels by Yumemakura will have their first anime series adaptation, which will debut on Netflix in 2023. The franchise was initially written by Yumemakura as a collection of short stories beginning in 1986. From 2000 through 2008, he penned three complete novels for the series. There are several picture books in the book series as well.

The live-action Onmyji and Onmyoji II movies from 2001 and 2003 were inspired by the literature. Beginning in 1994, Reiko Okano created a 13-volume manga adaptation of the show. Numerous live-action series in Japan were also influenced by the books.

Amano is well known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, Vampire Hunter D, and Sandman: The Dream Hunters, which he co-wrote with English graphic writer Neil Gaiman. He has worked on numerous anime and video game projects since joining the storied studio Tatsunoko Production when he was 15 years old.

The Gibiate series was created by the Gibiate Project, a multinational IP creation team that also includes Amano (Final Fantasy video games). At the 2019 Anime Expo, the group revealed the anime. In July 2020, the anime made its debut. Amano recently created the character designs for the Netflix anime Exception, which will premiere in October 2022.

Currently under development by Amano, the ZAN anime is scheduled to premiere in 2026 or later.
