It’s safe to assume that a film starring Jason Statham and a shark that’s 70 feet long will be entertaining. The MEG, released in 2018, was not just an entertaining smash but also a money-making engine for Warner Bros.
With a worldwide gross of nearly $530 million on a budget of under $130 million, it was inevitable that a sequel would be made, and we know you’re all eagerly anticipating The MEG 2: The Trench.
British director Ben Wheatley, better known for his offbeat indie films than shark movies, will helm the sequel The MEG. We wholeheartedly endorse this intriguing and unexpected gift of a disaster film to him.
The first film was a parody, complete with implausible special effects and a scene where Jason Statham punched a shark in the nose. Totally a movie, right? When will The MEG 2 be out, though? You need not risk your safety by entering shark-infested seas; we have already gone below the surface and retrieved the information you require.
MEG 2 Release Date
The MEG 2 is scheduled for a wide release on August 4, 2023, and is now in the post-production phase. Fans hope the release date doesn’t alter, but it’s possible that it could shift because the previous film was delayed.
The tweet below also shows the release date of MEG 2:

It comes as no surprise that a sequel to 2018’s The MEG will also hit theaters that year. The original The MEG was a commercial triumph, so the filmmakers behind the sequel are crossing their fingers for a repeat performance.
Does MEG 2: The Trench Have a Teaser?
On May 8, 2023, we were treated to the first MEG 2: The Trench Trailer. The trailer runs for about three minutes and includes deadly sharks and scuba diving. The monster is coming back for more, and we’re all eager to see what MEG 2: The Trench has in store. Watch the teaser down below.
Who is Coming Back for MEG 2: The Trench?
Jason Statham reprises his role as disgraced rescue diver Jonas Taylor, but his on-screen girlfriend Suyin will be absent due to Li Bingbing’s absence.
Though returning are Cliff Curtis as James ‘Mac’ Mackreides, Shuya Sophia Cai as Meiying, and Page Kennedy as DJ.
Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing, China’s highest-grossing male actor of all time, are among the newcomers to the cast of the sequel. But we don’t know who they’re playing just yet.
Ben Wheatley returns as director, and the screenplay was written by Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber.
