According to the statements made by the prosecutors, an arrest warrant has been issued for Kendall Howard, 30, charging him with two counts of attempted murder about the incident that took place on Tuesday and left two cops injured. According to the announcement made by Essex County Prosecutor Ted Stephens, the warrant for Howard’s arrest also includes charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm as well as unauthorized possession of a weapon for illicit purposes.
Earlier on Tuesday, police and a SWAT team were moving from apartment to apartment hunting for Howard, who they said withdrew inside the building after opening fire, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said during a press conference. Howard was allegedly hiding out in one of the apartments following the shooting. According to the mayor, the majority of the town’s inhabitants have already left. Fritz G. Fragé, the director of public safety in Newark, stated later on Tuesday that authorities suspect Howard fled the building at some time after the shooting since they were unable to locate him during the search that was conducted.

According to Baraka, Howard is also wanted in connection to a shooting that took place in Newark on October 28. Tuesday afternoon about one o’clock, someone recognized him from a flier and phoned the police to report that he was in a neighboring building. This was the first time officers had come into contact with him.
“They briefed him, there was a small conflict, the person pulled out a pistol, and shot two police officers at close range,” the witness said. According to what Baraka claimed, one of the cops was shot in the leg and now has a slight fracture. The other cop was struck by gunfire in the shoulder, and the bullet came dangerously close to striking his neck. He said that both are in a steady state of health.
Baraka extended his gratitude to the community on Tuesday night, adding that they had played a “tremendous role” in the investigation, particularly the one who had first called the authorities to provide a tip regarding the suspects’ whereabouts.

The Newark Division of the FBI has stated that it is helping with the investigation into the incident.

According to the Fraternal Order of Police, which is an organization that represents US law enforcement personnel, there were a total of 252 cops shot from the beginning of this year to September 30.
