Investigators searched an apartment complex in Newark where they believed the suspect in the shooting of two Newark police officers was hiding, only to find out that the individual was nowhere to be located when the search was completed.

East Orange resident Kendall Howard, age 30, has been recognized by the police as the suspect they are looking for. Around two o’clock in the afternoon in Newark, near the intersection of Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue, police allege he opened fire on the policemen. According to reports from Kevin Rincon of CBS2, the authorities were attempting to apprehend the suspect in connection with a different incident.

The cops who were injured are currently recuperating at University Hospital.

A tenant of an apartment building was able to identify a suspect in a shooting that occurred the previous week, which prompted the building’s management to alert the police. The officers conducted a check of the whole facility but were unable to locate the culprit, so they began to depart. After that, they went looking for him in the parking lot, and when they did, a gunfight broke out.

Residents were forced to remain inside their houses for a significant amount of time as many law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and ATF, maintained the lockdown.

“It was a terrible experience. Witness Rosalind Reeves stated, “At first, I assumed it was firecrackers, but then, since there were so many of them, then I recognized what it was.”

According to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a local citizen phoned the police after recognizing a suspect in a shooting who was included on a wanted flier. A few minutes later, police officers began searching the apartment complex thoroughly. They were just about ready to leave when they saw the suspect lurking in the parking lot.

“The individual pulled out a revolver and fired two cops when they were standing very near to him.” The gunfire was returned, as was the initial gunshot. “The gentleman ran back into the building,” Baraka reported.

That was the impetus for the extremely large response. Officers on the ground, as well as those on roofs, kept a sharp lookout for the person holding the firearm. The cops were taken to the hospital as quickly as possible.

“One of them had a bullet enter his face and out through his shoulder. He was admitted to the hospital and had surgery. His condition is currently unchanging. They intend to detain him for the night. The other cop received a leg wound from a gunshot. Fritz Fragé, the director of public safety in Newark, indicated that he is also at the hospital and that his status is stable.

After then, the culprit rushed back inside, but after nearly eight hours of searching, the police were unable to locate him or her inside.

“The offender is not now present in the structure. “There is a current active warrant out for the perpetrator’s arrest, and it is now being served,” Fragé stated.

“The inquiry into this matter is still ongoing. To assist us in identifying and locating Mr. Howard, we are requesting the collaboration and participation of the general public. But I am certain that all of the required resources are being deployed, and that is thanks to our federal partners as well as our state, county, and local collaborations,” said the state Attorney General Matthew Platkin.

In the meanwhile, many people are unhappy because they witnessed their neighborhood turn into a crime scene.

“How do they expect families and their children to feel secure in this area after what they just did?” One of the men inquired as to whether or not the suspect was still at large. “Even if they were all unsuccessful, someone else might be able to pull it off.”

“I’ve been standing here since 3:15 p.m. Victoria Emeghara-Owoo, a resident of the building, expressed her anger and sadness at the occurrence of events of this nature in the surrounding community.
