The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press statement that former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned Tuesday off a Florida beach.
According to the press release, emergency personnel were dispatched to a Destin beach at 2:12 p.m. after receiving reports that a group of people in the ocean was having trouble returning to land.
According to the sheriff’s office, Mallett went underwater and was not breathing when lifeguards rescued him. A local hospital was where he passed away, it said.
According to the NFL, Mallett was a superstar for the Arkansas Razorbacks before being selected by the New England Patriots in the third round in 2011. His seven seasons in the NFL were split between the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans, and the Baltimore Ravens.
The National Football League reported that Mallett started 21 games and threw for 1,835 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. After 2017 his career was over.
“The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett,” the team said on Twitter. “Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates, and all who are mourning his loss.”

Pro football legend Tom Brady posted a photo of himself and Mallett from their playing days on social media to express his sadness over Mallett’s passing.
“We lost a great man. Thank you for everything Ryan,” Brady wrote on Instagram. “Praying for the Mallett family and all their loved ones tonight.”
According to the school district’s website, he taught PE and health and led the White Hall Bulldogs football team.
“It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Coach Ryan Mallett,” the district said. “Coach Mallett was a beloved coach and educator. We ask that you remember his family, team, students, fellow coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.”

He served as an assistant coach at Mountain Home High School in Mountain Home, Arkansas, beginning in 2020, before being promoted to head coach in August 2022.
