Trooper K!lled in West Virginia Sh**ting, Suspect Arrested

Friday’s shooting in the southern portion of the state left one West Virginia State Police officer dead, another person hurt, and a suspect in custody, according to local, state, and federal authorities.

Public safety According to Will Thompson, the US attorney for the southern district of West Virginia, Sgt. Cory Maynard was fatally shot while performing his official duties in Mingo County.

The shooting’s few details were not immediately made public. The incident left Maynard dead “and injured another person,” according to the Louisville, Kentucky office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which is in charge of a field division that covers much of West Virginia.

The shooting set off a manhunt, and a suspect eventually was arrested, the Louisville ATF office said Friday. ATF agents in West Virginia supported police in the search, the office said.

The circumstances behind the shooting, the actual location, the state of the injured, the arrest, and the location of the suspect’s detention were not immediately known.

Jim Justice, the governor of West Virginia, commanded the flags at state-owned buildings be flown at half-staff in memory of Maynard.

The governor tweeted that Justice was “absolutely heartbroken” about Maynard’s passing.

The governor pleaded with residents of West Virginia to stand beside him and the first lady of the state “in embracing Trooper Maynard’s family, loved ones, and all of our courageous West Virginians in uniform during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Mingo County emergency management organization issued a warning to the public to stay inside as law enforcement searched for the suspect. Due to Maynard’s passing, the graduation ceremony scheduled for Friday night at Mingo Central High School was postponed.
