The Wife of Kobe Bryant Vanessa Bryant Receives $16 Million for Photographs of His Remains

NBC News says that Los Angeles County has given Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa Bryant, $16 million in damages because first responders’ photos of the crash site were leaked. Kobe Bryant and Vanessa Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash in 2020. Vanessa Laine Bryant is a model and businesswoman from the United States. She was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 5, 1982, and grew up there. Vanessa’s first job was as a model for music videos. She was in the videos of popular rappers like Snoop Dogg and Krazy Bones. During this time, she was hired to work on a music video for Kobe Bryant.

Vanessa Bryant and Chris Chester, whose wife and daughter also died in the crash, filed the lawsuit after they found out that Los Angeles County employees had taken and shared photos of the crash that showed human remains without permission. They went to court to get tens of millions of dollars in damages for emotional distress and invasions of privacy. The amount was not made public. After about four and a half hours of deliberation, the jury gave Bryant $16 million and gave Chester $15 million.

One of the lawyers for LA County in the case, Mira Hashmall, didn’t agree with the verdict, but she pointed out that the jury gave both plaintiffs much less than what they were asking for: “We disagree with the jury’s decision that the County was at fault, but we think the money shows that the jury didn’t think the evidence supported the plaintiffs’ request for $75 million in damages for emotional distress.”

Nine people died in the terrible crash, and Bryant and Chester’s lawyers said they were hurt even more when they found out that some LA County firefighters and other first responders had taken photos as “memorabilia” of the accident and shared them with their friends and coworkers.
