Ballerini and Evans met when they co-hosted an award presentation in his native Australia, but it wasn’t until the afterparty that they started to develop romantic feelings for each other. When asked by PEOPLE about their first meeting, Ballerini recalled, “He was like, ‘Let’s take a shot.’ “
She continued, “I remember setting the shot down and looked at him like, ‘Oh… he’s superhot.’ Later that night, he asked to kiss me on the cheek like a gentleman and I obliged.
The couple tied the knot in front of one hundred friends and family members in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in the winter of 2017.
The unconventional way in which Ballerini and Evans kicked off their celebrations with a shot of tequila was explained by the singer to PEOPLE as a reflection of the beginnings of their relationship. “It’s a little bit different but that’s how we started,” she said.
The most meaningful part of their wedding was not the “tequila theme,” but rather their handwritten vows.
“Kelsea’s vows were, as you would expect, poetic, sweet — like, mind-blowingly good. Our officiant was like, ‘Hey, Morgan, beat that!'” Evans added. “I said mine, and I was going to finish with a few lines of the first song I wrote for her [‘Dance with Me’]. I got halfway through them, and she started to lose it, then I started to lose it — so I ended up having to cut it a little bit short!”
What’s the Reason for Their Split?
In Touch has received court paperwork showing that Kelsea filed for divorce in Davidson County, Tennessee, in August 2022, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the split. The “Hole in the Bottle” singer made the announcement on her social media pages.
Friends, I’ve always done my best to be open and honest with you about my life, even as I’ve taken measures to safeguard various aspects of my developing private life. Kelsea posted on her Instagram Story, “Since this is now public knowledge, I feel it’s important for you to hear from me personally that I am going through a divorce.” This heartbreaking choice is the culmination of a long and winding road of love, personal development, and shared sacrifice.
The “Love Me Like You Mean It” singer’s social media admirers had noticed her husband’s absence in the months preceding the sad announcement as she regularly updated them on her personal and professional life. The singer posted a somber but ultimately optimistic Instagram statement shortly after sharing her personal news: “Right where I’m at with what I have.”

About two months later, Kelsea and Morgan settled their divorce with the help of their separate attorneys. Kelsea’s “rights and privileges” as a single person were also “restored” as part of the settlement.
